Birkenhead High School Academy - Admissions Policy
Birkenhead High School is due to transfer from the independent sector to Academy status, and open as Birkenhead High School Academy in September 2009, subject to the confirmation of the Secretary of State.
As the first all-through girls' Academy, Birkenhead High offers an exciting vision of outstanding education for future generations of girls living both within and outside the Wirral, enabling a still wider range of students to benefit from the ethos of the school and the GDST's expertise.
The Academy will be a non-denominational school for girls aged from three to 19 years old, specialising in Music and Mathematics. It will remain on the current site of Birkenhead High School near Oxton in the Wirral.
If you have any questions or comments on aspects of this policy, please email these to nicole.magnier@uk.pkf.com by 3 October 2008. It would help us when analysing responses if you state whether you are a parent, teacher, governor, etc.

Admissions Procedure
Admissions are drawn from both within and outside the Wirral area, reflecting the broad community the school now serves, and applications comply with national arrangements but are prioritised in terms of school needs as follows*:
Nursery (18 full-time, or 36 part time, places): sisters of current pupils first, remaining places offered by random allocation from all those applying;
Reception – two form entry (40 places): children at the Academy’s Nursery and sisters of girls already in the Junior or Senior Department first, remaining places offered by random allocation;
Year 7 – Four form entry (100 places in total, of which up to 40 will be taken by girls transferring from Year 6 at the Academy, and 60 will be open to external applicants): pupils transferring from Year 6 at the Academy are guaranteed a place. Next, 10% of pupils are selected for aptitude for music. To ensure the intake is representative of the ability profile of those children applying to the Academy, remaining places are allocated on the basis of banding in relation to those applying and, within each band, places are first offered to sisters and thereafter by random allocation.
All applicants are expected to sit a non-verbal reasoning test to establish their banding, and those who wish to be considered for selection for their aptitude to music will sit a music aptitude test. Both tests will be held on Saturday 29 November 2008 at the school;
Year 12 – Sixth Form (100 place, of which we expect that 65 will be taken by girls transferring from Year 11 at the academy, and the remaining places (approximately 35) will be open to external applicants: admission will be in line with Birkenhead High’s minimum entry requirement: six GCSE passes at Grade B or above, including English and Mathematics. Individual subjects may also have particular requirements for the grades obtained at GCSE.
All places will be free once the Academy opens in September 2009: parents currently paying school fees will no longer need to do so.
*As is legally required, priority is given to looked-after children at all phases, and (other than Nursery) to those with an SEN statement naming Birkenhead High School Academy.
