This week, spine-tingling screams and nervous laughter echoed from our historic air raid shelter as it was transformed into a terrifying trail of ghosts and ghouls. The spooktacular Halloween Ghost Tour, masterminded by our dedicated Sixth Form Senior Prefect team, saw students from all year groups bravely sign up for a fright during their enrichment period.
The dark, narrow corridors of the shelter provided the perfect, eerie backdrop for the event. The tour was brought to life (and death!) by our talented sixth formers, who donned gruesome costumes and terrifying makeup to become a host of frightening figures. Groups of younger students were guided through the winding tunnels, encountering scary characters lurking in the shadows at every turn.
A huge congratulations to the prefect team for arranging such a memorable and fun-filled event that brought together students from across the whole school community.
As part of World Mental Health Awareness Day last Friday, Mrs Morris and a group of volunteers held a drop-in session available to all students during lunchtime. They took part in lots of creative, fun activities and also helped to come up with suggestions as to how we as a school can further support the mental health and wellbeing of our students. We would like to thank all students who took part and provided some fantastic suggestions.
Here at Birkenhead High School Academy, we are marking World Mental Health Day this Friday, October 10th, by reaffirming our commitment to the wellbeing of every student. This day is an important opportunity to encourage open conversations and ensure our entire school community knows where to turn for support. We want to highlight a vital resource for families from the charity Young Minds, whose message to parents and carers is clear: "No matter what your child is going through, we’re with you."
For free, confidential advice, you can call their Parents Helpline on 0808 802 5544 or visit youngminds.org.uk/parents-helpline.
Year 13 students have arrived safely for their trip to Krakow. They have met the daughter of a woman who saved her Jewish friend from the death camps at the Galicia museum, Krakow. She was awarded the honourable title of “Righteous among nations”. A poignant start to their tour.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge CBE, who attended Birkenhead High School Academy in the 1940s. Embodying the Birkenhead High School values, and those of the Girls’ Day School Trust, Dame Patricia spoke with conviction and was unafraid to think differently. She has left an indelible mark on our school, through her uplifting support and patronage, helping the next generation of girls and young women pursue a career in the arts and supporting them to become leaders and future change makers.
Do you have questions about Special Educational Need (SEN), Children’s mental health or general pre-teen/teen
behaviours? We would like to welcome parents and carers to a drop-in session with Miss Kennerley (SENDCo) and Mrs Morris (Inclusion Lead). This will be an informal session to provide advice, support and signposting to local services.
We held our first 'Careers Lunch' this week with students across the school invited to hear from Emma Kaye, a senior Paramedic from North West Ambulance Service. She talked about routes into paramedic careers, the emergency services and gave us an account of the 'day in the life' of a paramedic.
To celebrate World Afro day (15th September), our sixth-form students participated in an African drum workshop led by the Music department. The theme for 2025 was creative understanding of culture. In taking part, they were part of a Guinness world record attempt to have the largest cultural awareness session. This workshop was part of our wellbeing initiative 'Together Tuesday'.
Year 7 students were treated to a delightful taste of France this morning with a special French Breakfast event! Organised by the fantastic Monsieur Voisin and Madame Willis, the classroom was filled with the delicious aromas of a traditional French spread.
Students enjoyed a mouth-watering selection of classic French pastries, including freshly made crepes, buttery croissants, and pain au chocolat. To complete the authentic experience, there was plenty of rich hot chocolate and refreshing orange juice on offer. It was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 7 students to experience a bit of French culture and enjoy a truly scrumptious start to their day. A huge thank you to Mr. Voisin and Mrs. Willis for making this memorable event possible.
