Reliving the Blitz

Our WW2 Air Raid Shelters

Girls from Birkenhead High School were evacuated to Yeaton Peverey in Shrewsbury at the start of World War 2.

Headmistress Miss Stephen, parents and staff rallied together to raise funds in order to have underground air raid shelters built so that the evacuated girls may return home.

The shelters were designed by Mr Merton, a chartered architect and husband of Birkenhead High School’s Art Teacher.

The shelters were built by Mr Robert Lloyd and his building company.  Mr Lloyd had two daughters at the school, Betty and Jean who had been evacuated.

The shelters were officially opened in June 1940 by Miss Stephen.

Having gained Heritage Lottery Funding we have been able to restore and re-open our shelters as a piece of living history to be made available to pupils from local schools and our community.

We are always looking for volunteers to help out at events and run tours of the shelters. If you would like to volunteer please email shelters@birkhs.gdst.net.

Tours cost a small fee of £2 per person. Donations are always welcome to maintain the upkeep of the shelters and these can be made in person, via our fundraising page and/or  via Parentpay”.

Below is a link to the BBC report by Andy Gill taking you on a tour around the newly renovated shelters:
